In India’s drought-prone state of Maharashtra, some farmers are replacing sugarcane with Napier grass, a fast-growing crop that requires less water and provides livestock feed. The African grass is also being tested as a renewable source of biogas and Bio-CNG. While researchers and state authorities see potential to support farmers facing water shortages, experts caution that wider cultivation of the non-native species could also pose environmental risks.
