Japan is assessing the aftermath of a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern island of Kyushu, killing at least 18 people. In Kashima, rescue teams searched through the rubble of a shopping mall where thousands were present when the quake hit. Much of the destruction there was linked to a gas explosion that followed. In Yatsushiro, a paper factory smokestack collapsed, leaving several people dead and others missing. Volunteers are helping clear damaged religious sites, while thousands have taken shelter as authorities inspect transport links, homes and infrastructure.
