Wildfires have torn through southern Crete in recent weeks, destroying homes, farmland and parts of the protected palm forest of Preveli, a tourist attraction.

One resident fled with his wheelchair-bound neighbor before returning to find his house in ruins.

While families assess the damage, volunteers are rescuing animals that survived the blaze. The fires claimed the lives of two firefighters and left communities facing a long and difficult recovery.
