German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suffered more setbacks in two state elections on Sunday, including a historic defeat for his party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
He acknowledged that his party’s result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in particular was a “disaster,” but nevertheless vowed to press ahead with potentially painful reforms, arguing that Germany’s economic and political problems made difficult and potentially unpopular reforms more, not less, urgent.
