Jaishankar urges multilateralism at UNGA
India has co-sponsored an inaugural multilateralism summit on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York “at a time when the global order is under stress,” its top diplomat has said.
India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said Delhi was glad to join the first ever Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace & Prosperity (P4M) Summit held in the UN headquarters, the Press Trust of India reported.
The Indian foreign minister said that while the world has witnessed a steady rebalancing, “extreme competition, geopolitical tensions and actual conflicts have given this an entirely different character.”
“If left unchecked, it would call into question the very spirit of international cooperation, and that is why it is so essential that multilateralism asserts itself strongly at this juncture,” he said.
The summit was also co-sponsored by European Council President Antonio Costa, alongside countries including Kenya, Australia, Barbados, Brazil and Canada.
“We are at a critical moment for the world,” Costa said. “Conflict is spreading, international law, including the United Nations Charter, is being repeatedly violated, including by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and the multilateral system is under stress.”
Jaishankar’s push for multilateralism comes when India is facing strained diplomatic ties with Washington under US President Donald Trump’s second term. New Delhi’s close relations with Russia and continued purchase of Russian oil has also been a point of strain with European counterparts. Several other countries are also forging new trade and security relations to diversify away from global powers like the US and China.

Minor allegedly gang-raped in South Delhi neighborhood
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men posing as policemen in New Delhi on Monday evening, authorities said on Tuesday.
The girl had been visiting a temple in southeast Delhi with a male friend, before they both retreated to a nearby park.
There, they were intercepted by three men who claimed to be police officers, authorities said, as reported by Hindustan Times. One of the accused is said to have held the male friend down while the girl was gang-raped. The men also reportedly threatened the duo with arrest if they reported the assault. The incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. local time (0200 GMT).
The Police received a call about the incident soon after and reached the spot, taking the girl for a medical examination. Authorities have launched a formal investigation under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Indian criminal law and teams were deployed to trace the accused.

One of the three accused of the gang-rape fired three shots at the police as they attempted to arrest him. During the exchange, one of the bullets struck an officer’s bulletproof vest. The accused was shot in his right leg before he was arrested, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
The news of the Delhi gang-rape comes a day after a viral video from the eastern state of Bihar surfaced on social media, showing a group of about seven men molesting a minor girl while assaulting her male companion. The video has enraged netizens and political leaders alike.
Delhi remains one of the least safe cities for women in India, according to the National Annual Report and Index on Women’s safety 2025.

The Indian capital woke up to disturbing news of a minor who was allegedly gang-raped in an upscale Delhi neighborhood on Monday evening. The police were called in soon after, but the incident is yet another reminder of how Delhi remains one of the least safe cities in the country for women.
Moving from the political capital to the financial capital, Mumbai, students of one of India’s biggest tech institutes continue to speak out against extreme exam pressure after a 20-year-old allegedly took their own life last week. However, the institute’s faculty are also protesting, backing a professor who was suspended from his deanship as a result.
On the global front, we have India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York where he has met several European partners on the sidelines of the event. Meanwhile, in Texas, a large idol of a Hindu deity has emerged as a point of debate ahead of the US midterm elections.
