A prison compound in Indonesia has been demolished after public outcry following the discovery of luxury apartments within the penitentiary.
Investigators reported finding luxury facilities in Cibinong Prison in Bogor, near Jakarta, allegedly used by favoured inmates during a surprise inspection on 23 September.
The units contained amenities including air conditioners, big-screen televisions, refrigerators, sofas and dining areas. Investigators also reported finding a gym, a golf simulator under construction and luxury vehicles in the complex.
Officials said the residences appeared to house inmates, although prison officials claim they were for staff.
The incident has drawn widespread public attention and renewed scrutiny of Indonesia’s prisons, which have long faced allegations that wealthy or well-connected inmates can obtain preferential treatment through bribery.
