Uganda: Tooro crowns new king amid family dispute

Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has crowned Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as king. While his role is cultural, his succession remains contested as parts of the royal family challenge his claim to the throne.

The coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new king of Uganda’sTooro Kingdom marks the end of a contentious succession dispute that divided the royal family. While traditional kings hold no political power in Uganda, they remain influential cultural figures and symbols of identity.

Nyabongo succeeds King Oyo, who died of cancer after more than three decades on the throne. Facing a young population and lingering family divisions, the new monarch has pledged to unite the kingdom and strengthen its cultural heritage.
