Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a runoff after neither candidate secured the majority needed for an outright victory.
Incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, while his challenger, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, hopes to return Brazil to the conservative policies associated with his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.
With Bolsonaro narrowly leading the first round, both candidates are now battling for undecided voters. The campaign is expected to focus on social programs, the cost-of-living crisis, corruption, security and Brazil‘s future foreign policy direction, making the runoff a pivotal moment for Latin America’s largest economy.
