Police deny permission for October 10 ‘Cockroach’ protest

Police have not authorized the Cockroach Janta Party’s planned demonstrations in New Delhi on Saturday.

The Delhi Police said on Friday that they had received an application from the CJP on October 7 informing them of the protest but it was on “very short notice.”

“Our established guidelines require such requests to be submitted 10 days prior to the planned protest, which was not the case here,” Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Nupur Prasad told a press conference.

The official went on to add that CJP’s alleged violation of rules during their previous protest was taken into account in denying them permission to protest.

Prasad said that Section 163 of India’s criminal procedure law was in force in the New Delhi area, barring any form of assembly or protest.

Over 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the city ahead the planned protest, according to news agency PTI.

CJP protest: Train services to two Delhi stations to be canceled on October 10, reports say

Indian Railways has canceled mail and express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m. on October 10 amid a protest called by the Cockroach Janta party (CJP), Indian media reports said Friday.

The Times of India cited an internal railway order as saying that the decision was made due to “anticipated severe road traffic congestion” around the two major stations in the capital.

Meanwhile, Delhi police have proposed the closure of entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations in the capital and reducing train frequency at the stations, news agency ANI reported, citing an official communication.

India’s Cockroach movement leaders have been sounding the bugle for a nationwide march to New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10 to demand the resignation of the country’s top poll official.

India’s Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL suspended from US green card filings

In a setback for Indian IT workers, the United States has suspended Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL from its Permanent Labor Certification program.

The certification allows employers to apply for green cards for H-1B visa workers.

The Indian companies are on a list of eight major tech firms, including Microsoft, which have been barred from applying for the program under which foreign employees can work permanently in the US.

The Trump administration said an alleged abuse of the program was behind its decision.

“I am hereby suspending from the Permanent Labor Certification program some of the largest IT outsourcing firms in the world, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL, and Capgemini,” Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling said Thursday.

Sonderling said the suspensions were due to ongoing federal investigations into the companies.

Indian media reports have said that the move could potentially impact thousands of the country’s IT professionals.

According to reported figures, Indian applicants secured nearly 70% of all US H-1B visa approvals in the 2025 fiscal year.

News agency ANI on Friday cited a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) as saying that the US green card freeze is a warning for the Indian IT sector to prepare for broader restrictions on foreign workers.

The New Delhi-based think tank advised that Indian IT companies should diversify export markets, strengthen delivery from India and expand local hiring in the US where needed, ANI reported.

It also called for more focus on artificial intelligence to reduce the sector’s vulnerability to sudden changes in US policy, according to ANI.

India: Cockroach Janta Party leaders allege mass detentions ahead of Delhi protest, decry ’emergency’

As the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) ramps up its call for a protest march in New Delhi on October 10 over alleged voter roll manipulation, the youth-led movement has accused India’s authorities of mass detentions of its members.

CJP spokesperson Deepak Baliyan and activists from across the country were among those arrested, CJP leaders said in a series of social media posts on Thursday night.

Baliyan was released later in the evening after being arrested by Rajasthan police at his house, CJP Co-Convener Ashutosh Ranka said on X on Friday.

Ranka claimed that at least 10,000 people were detained country-wide on Thursday.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged on X that a group of the movement’s volunteers from the state of Telangana were arrested by Madhya Pradesh police onboard a train in Bhopal.

The movement earlier said that a group of students from the western Indian city of Pune who were headed for the planned protest in Delhi were also detained. The CJP said they were being taken on a bus to an unknown location.

There have been no police statements on the alleged detentions so far.

Cockroach movement describes detentions as ’emergency’

Leaders of the CJP have railed against the alleged mass arrests, likening the situation to a “state of emergency.”

“Why not just declare EMERGENCY?”, Dipke said as he reacted to a video of the students from Pune purportedly being detained.

The last time an emergency decree was issued in India was under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the mid-70s. Emergency powers were applied by the Congress leader for 21 months, with civil liberties being suspended, most of the opposition being jailed and media censored.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calls the period  a “dark chapter” in India’s history.

Another prominent CJP spokesperson Saurav Das accused the Modi government of being “at war with its own young citizens.”

“Hello India. We are under a State of Emergency,” Das wrote on X.

CJP’s Abhijeet Dipke set to arrive in Delhi on October 10

Meanwhile, founder ‘Cockroach’ Dipke has said that he will land in Delhi on Saturday and march to Jantar Mantar.

“This intimidation is not going to work, Modi. The youth of this country are no longer scared of you,” Dipke said.

Thousands are expected to converge at the capital’s Jantar Mantar protest site on Saturday to participate in CJP’s protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of voter lists.

Jantar Mantar served as ground-zero for the viral online Cockroach movement’s debut protest in July which culminated with the resignation of the then-education minister.

The CJP, opposition parties and their student units have been holding near-daily demonstrations against Kumar.

Around 130 million names have been removed from electoral rolls under an exercise called Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Opposition leaders and critics say that those struck off the lists include a huge number of minority voters.

They accuse Modi’s BJP of using the exercise as a tool to secure future electoral gains, questioning the independence of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which is overseeing the exercise.

The ECI and the BJP deny the allegations.
