South Korean stocks plunged on Friday, triggering a 20-minute circuit breaker suspending tradingafter the benchmark KOSPI fell over 8%.

Chipmakers SK Hynix and Samsung led the sell-off as investors worried that a Democratic victory in the US midterm elections could slow spending on AI data centers — a key source of demand for advanced semiconductors.

Analysts say the decline reflects growing doubts about whether soaring AI-related valuations match business realities.

Though some see signs of a market correction, others argue that strong demand and revenues still support the sector’s long-term prospects.
