The killing of four migrant farmworkers in Amendolara, southern Italy, has exposed the harsh realities of labor exploitation in agriculture. Activists, unions and prosecutors describe a system driven by illegal recruiters known as Caporali, who control jobs, housing and wages for vulnerable migrant workers. Investigators suspect organized crime involvement, while campaigners say many migrants are lured to Italy with false promises before ending up in abusive, slave-like conditions.
