From symptoms to treatment and medication: the male body has traditionally been the standard in medicine. But awareness is growing – in both healthcare and research – that women’s bodies are different. The unique characteristics of the female menstrual cycle, for example, can cause distinct symptoms and conditions such as endometriosis: a painful disorder that often goes undiagnosed for years. Heart disease can also present different symptoms in women. Even in emergencies, women are at a disadvantage; they’re less likely to receive CPR during cardiac arrest and are therefore at great risk of dying.
