Why does Bayreuth — a small town far from the major cities — become the destination of a worldwide Wagner pilgrimage every summer? And why has this been the case for 150 years?
The composer Richard Wagner, a controversial superstar of the 19th century, founded the Bayreuth Festival in 1876. Richard Wagner had a new, enormous opera house built specifically for his festival. Performances take place here only in the summer, and the program features works by a single composer — namely, Wagner, of course.
