Italy’s tougher security laws are fueling debate over democracy and the right to protest. In Turin, climate activist Filippo of Extinction Rebellion and labor activist Mahmoud Aboutabikh say they face exclusion orders, court cases and fines of up to €10,000 for protests and strikes. Critics, including constitutional law experts, warn the measures could restrict civil liberties, while government and police representatives argue they are needed to balance public security and freedom. More than 250 constitutional scholars have called for a review of the laws.
