No respite for France’s firefighters battling wildfires

More than 2,000 firefighters are battling wildfires in France as a new heatwave and falling humidity raise the risk of new flare-ups.

French firefighters are working around the clock to contain major wildfires in the Gironde region as a new heatwavepushes temperatures close to 40°C (104°F). More than 2,000 firefighters from France and neighboring countries are deployed, with more than 100 injured and four killed. Crews are battling flare-ups in burned areas while local volunteers provide support. Exhaustion is taking a toll on teams after days of intense work. Scientists say climate change is making wildfires like these more frequent.
