Thousands of Spokane-area residents are grappling with the aftermath of devastating wildfires that swept through eastern Washington state over the weekend. More than 60,000 people were forced to evacuate as wind-driven flames destroyed more than 700 homes. Residents have returned to find their homes reduced to ash.

Authorities have arrested Spokane resident Aaron Farinacci, 37, on suspicion of first-degree arson in connection with the Old Trails Fire, the largest and most destructive of the three major blazes. He is being held on a $1m (£744,150) bond. Investigators say they believe the fire was intentionally started using matches or a lighter found on the suspect at the time of his arrest.

Officials report no deaths or injuries.
