Less than a week after tens of thousands of migrants attempted to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, life in the neighboring Moroccan town of Fnideq has largely returned to normal. But residents say deep economic hardship, unemployment and a lack of opportunities continue to drive young people to leave. Many describe the crossing not only as an attempt to migrate to Spain, but also as a protest against neglect, dwindling prospects and years of economic decline following border closures and the collapse of cross-border trade.
