Iran says it is in the final stages of reaching an agreement with Oman on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. Reports suggest the deal would give Tehran oversight of vessels entering the Persian Gulf, while Oman would manage outbound traffic.
If finalized, the arrangement could mark a significant shift in regional influence and raise questions about freedom of navigation, security, and the balance of power in the Gulf. DW spoke to analyst Megan Sutcliffe and former US diplomat Alan Eyre, who helped negotiate the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, about what this could mean for the region and beyond.
