The return of the Djidji Ayokwe, a sacred “talking drum” looted during French colonial rule, has sparked celebrations in Côte d’Ivoire. The three-metre-long instrument, used by the Ebrié people to send warning messages, was displayed in Paris for decades before being returned after years of negotiations. Marked by ceremonies, cultural performances and attended by President Alassane Ouattara on Independence Day, the homecoming represents France’s first restitution of a cultural artifact to Côte d’Ivoire and a powerful moment of historical significance for local communities.
