Beauty salons in Germany do not always meet the needs of Asian women. Differences in skin types, facial features, beauty standards, and communication styles can make it difficult for them to find treatments that feel truly personalized. German beauty salons are often based on Western norms, and some Asian clients say they feel that their needs are overlooked.
This Japanese-owned beauty salon in the western German city of Düsseldorf was established to serve Japanese women seeking beauty care in Germany. Serving primarily Japanese clients, the salon combines technical expertise with personalized advice, creating an environment where clients feel comfortable talking openly about both beauty concerns and personal matters.
Atsuko Matsui, a Japanese businesswoman in Düsseldorf who visits the salon every month, says the experience is about more than just beauty treatments. The salon has become a place of comfort and belonging, where she can let her guard down, take a break from code-switching, and reconnect with her cultural identity.
