US President Donald Trump has ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America” on US federal maps and in naming systems. The move affects only US government usage and does not change the lake’s name in Canadaor internationally. Canadian leaders swiftly rejected the change, noting that “Ontario” is a centuries-old Indigenous Wendat name.
The dispute comes amid worsening US-Canada relations, including a recent tariffbattle, turning what might appear symbolic into another flashpoint in a broader diplomatic confrontation.
