Europe’s museums are facing a growing threat from increasingly violent and sophisticated criminal networks, according to Europol. In the latest high-profile heist, two men walked into Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts as visitors on Thursday only to storm out with a priceless 200-carat platinum and diamond necklace worth several million dollars.
Investigators say thieves are targeting high-value items such as jewelry, precious metals, gemstones and Chinese porcelain, often using tactics linked to organized crime.
The report highlights suspected insider involvement, the use of social media and messaging apps to recruit offenders, and international trafficking routes that move stolen cultural treasures beyond Europe, making recovery more difficult.
