Many Malawians returning from South Africa amid rising anti-migrant tensions are struggling to rebuild their lives. But entrepreneur Ali Ajidah Pazzon has made his return into a success story.
Drawing on skills learned during his 15 years in South Africa, he reopened his bag manufacturing business in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, creating jobs for fellow returnees and unemployed workers. His company now employs nine people and produces durable tote and travel bags.
As Malawi pledges support for nearly 60,000 returnees, Pazzon’s story highlights how entrepreneurship, skills transfer and small business growth can help drive job creation and economic opportunity.
