Europe’s wildfire season is becoming more dangerous despite major investments in firefighting.
More than 300,000 people were forced to flee their homes in France and Spain this summer; one blaze in France became so intense it generated its own weather system.
Scientists have warned that climate change could dramatically expand burned areas across Europe by the end of the century. Experts say prevention measures, from prescribed burns to grazing animals and firebreaks, will be critical, but cutting greenhouse gas emissions remains essential to slowing the growing wildfire threat.
