How much oil is getting through the Strait of Hormuz?

Despite months of conflict, attacks on Gulf states and continuing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, oil supplies remain well above worst-case forecasts. Why? Energy expert Ben Cahill shares his insights with DW.

More than six months into the US-Israeli war on Iran, the deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz is still unresolved, and the threat to petro states in the Persian Gulf is ever present. 

Oil prices have gone up — but they are a long way short of the worst-case scenarios from the IEA and a long list of analysts. 

So why aren’t oil prices higher, and just how much oil is actually getting through the Strait of Hormuz?

Ben Cahill, non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center, speaks with DW about the discrepancy between US government claims on oil transit through the strait and shipping tracker data.
