Housing in London has been extremely expensive for years, while at the same time, many buildings – from offices and schools to hospitals and community centers – lie abandoned. Property guardian schemes provide an unusual solution: People move into vacant buildings as “guardians,” pay relatively low rent and help prevent vandalism and squatting. The trend has picked up, and now thousands live this way in London – often in buildings never intended as homes. For many, it’s the only affordable way to live in the city center. But there are drawbacks, such as short notice periods, makeshift infrastructure and strict rules.
