Mongbwalu, a gold-mining town in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the epicenter of the most recentEbola outbreak. So far, neither a vaccine nor medication is available, and the number of cases is rising faster than ever before.
The region is controlled by militias that profit from the gold trade, which makes the work of health teams even more difficult. Many local people view the aid workers with suspicion or open hostility, and in some cases, medical personnel have been attacked. We accompany Deogratias Kasereka, the first Ebola survivor in Mongbwalu.
After his recovery, he joined the aid workers and has since been working to educate the local population and build trust, including among gold miners and churchgoers.
