The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) celebrated a landslide victory in Saxony-Anhalt, dealing German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his center-right Christian Democratic Union a major blow. The AfD won 43.8% of the vote; Merz’s CDU fell to 17.2%. With questions over how a state government can be formed and two more state elections approaching, the Saxony-Anhalt result is turning up the pressure on Merz, his agenda and Germany’s coalition government.
