Floods in the Spanish southeastern town of Madrigueras have killed an 102-year-old woman, regional authorities said.
Madrigueras, which has a population of around 4,000 residents, is located near the city of Albacete in the Spanish autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha.
Authorities said 90 people had to be rescued due to flooding in the town.
Local Spanish media said the elderly woman was found dead in her home after the floodwaters had reached a depth of one meter (3.2 feet).
The floods in the region were caused by persistent torrential rainfall on Friday. Spanish authorities said around 140 liters of rainfall per square meter came down in Madrigueras.
Sanchez: Spanish government monitoring flood situation
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a post on X, said his government is monitoring the situation. He also expressed his regards to the family of the woman who died in the flooding in Madrigueras.
Spanish meteorological authorities said heavy rainfall is expected to continue in eastern Spain through Sunday.
The torrential rain and flooding comes after the Mediterranean country witnessed its hottest summer on record this year.
Deadly wildfires were reported in Spain’s north and south in recent months due to frequent hot, dry conditions.
