Far-right AfD wins first state parliament speaker post

The AfD has become the first far-right party since World War II to secure the post of speaker in a German state parliament. The breakthrough came in Saxony-Anhalt after the party’s landslide election victory last month.

Germany’s far-right AfD party has taken a significant step toward exercising political power in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.

One month after winning 44% of the regional vote, the party secured the presidency of the state parliament, with Tobias Rausch elected as speaker of the house.
