Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks on Russia, hitting oil facilities and other infrastructure in and around St. Petersburg, the hometown of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The strikes came as US President Donald Trump accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of not wanting to end the war. Trump has warned Ukraine against attacking Russian oil infrastructure, arguing that the strikes are driving up global diesel prices.
He has also defended his decision to waive new sanctions on Moscow, saying he wants to keep Russia at the negotiating table. But is Trump’s strategy putting pressure on Putin or rewarding him? Andrew D’Anieri, associate director at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, tells DW News that Ukraine’s attacks are part of a sustained campaign to weaken Russia’s oil revenues and its ability to finance the war.
