Police have clamped down on protests in Tirana, where  thousands of students are demonstrating against corruption, rising education costs and poor university conditions Albania.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds, with scores of people detained and several injured.

The demonstrations began in May, but the response has grown increasingly violent. This week, protesters attempted to damage ministry buildings.

Students are demanding better university conditions, greater financial support and improved employment prospects after graduation.

With opposition groups and the wider anti-government movement also joining the protests, could Albania be heading toward a broader political crisis?
