The incident took place amid nationwide Gen Z protests in France on October 17, 2026, driven by anger over rising living costs, deteriorating public services and conditions in schools.

While many marches were peaceful, violent clashes erupted in several cities, including Paris, where police used tear gas and water cannons and protesters erected barricades. Hundreds of people were arrested nationwide.
