US Democrats have won control of Congress in the 2026 midterms, handing President Donald Trump and Republicans a sweeping defeat that reached deep into GOP strongholds.
The party flipped at least seven Senate seats, including Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina, while holding battleground seats in Georgia and Michigan.
Democrats also captured more than two dozen House districts.
The results give Democrats power to block Trump’s legislative agenda, reject nominees and investigate his administration.
Brandon Bohrn, a US political analyst with the Bertelsmann Stiftung, analyzes the election results for DW.
