Anthropic on Wednesday announced it has appointed the experimental physicist Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, which helps elect the company’s board members and advise its leadership.
Stubbs is a professor of physics and astronomy at Harvard University, where he previously served as the dean of science. His research explores subjects like gravitational physics, dark matter, dark energy and observational cosmology, according to Harvard’s website. Stubbs is the first physicist to join Anthropic’s Trust.
“I’m using AI tools in my research every day, and the doors they’re opening for science are incredible,” Stubbs wrote in a post on LinkedIn on Wednesday. “As a teacher, I’m also confronting some of the challenging questions they raise. As a grandfather, I want the generation growing up with AI to be better off for it.”
Stubbs’ appointment comes as Anthropic is gearing up for what is widely expected to be a massive IPO. The company confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, and it has been engaging in meetings with prospective investors in recent weeks. Anthropic announced plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund on Sunday, with the potential for more to be added at its board’s discretion.
Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust is financially independent from the company’s management and investors, and has the ability to appoint “a majority” of Anthropic’s board, according to a blog post. The company said trustees also advise board members and other leadership, especially around the “societal impacts of AI.”
In addition to Stubbs, Anthropic’s Trust includes Ben Bernanke, the former chair of the Federal Reserve, Neil Buddy Shah, CEO of the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and Richard Fontaine, a national security expert.
“I’m so grateful for the chance to help carry out this important work,” Stubbs said.
