MIAMI: Cape Verde refused to give up on their fairytale run at a first-ever World Cup as they took Lionel Messi’s Argentina to extra time on Friday (Jul 3).
A moment of magic from Messi opened the scoring for the defending champions with his 20th World Cup goal on 29 minutes.
But the overwhelmingly Argentine crowd in Miami was stunned on the hour mark when Deroy Duarte fired in an equaliser for the Blue Sharks to take the game to an extra 30 minutes.
Argentina thought they had done enough to settle the tie when Lisandro Martínez put them back in front during extra time, but the underdogs hit back again through Sidny Cabral, whose equaliser reignited hopes of a historic upset and pushed the game to the brink.
With penalties looming, Diney Borges struck late in extra time to restore Argentina’s lead at 3-2.
