Cape Verde is often seen as one of Africa’s most welcoming countries for LGBTQ people. In Mindelo, makeup artist Leonardo Oliveira says he can live openly today, despite experiencing bullying as a child.

While growing visibility, family support and cultural change have improved acceptance, challenges remain. LGBTQ advocates say discrimination, particularly in employment for trans people, persists and that more education is needed to strengthen inclusion.
