The man who died after being shot in south Dublin on Sunday has been named locally as Mark Cullen, who was 39.

Cullen was shot in the leg on Kill Avenue in Dún Laoghaire and bled to death on the scene as people in the area made their way to Mass.

No arrests have been made and Gardaí (Irish police) are investigating all circumstances surrounding the killing.

One line of inquiry is that Cullen, who was from Dublin, was in the area for a pre-arranged meeting and that whoever shot him did not intend to kill him.

However, all lines of inquiry remain open.

The shooting happened about 08:30 local time at Patrician Park, Kill Avenue on Sunday.

It comes as 2025 was the first year for decades in which nobody was killed in the Republic of Ireland through shooting incidents.

Irish Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph says residents are “shocked and scared”

On Sunday, Irish Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph told RTÉ that people in the area have been left shocked by the incident.

“It’s quite unfortunate. I haven’t seen anything like this before, and people are shocked and scared.

“People are living very peacefully, and especially in this area, very community-oriented people talking to each other, but obviously, this is my first time hearing something like this it’s a big shock,” he said.

Local resident Anthony Byrne said: “It’s very strange. I can’t remember anything like this before, first time I’ve seen anything like this.”
