Finland: Europe’s race for critical raw materials

In the Arctic wilderness of Lapland lie rich mineral deposits. Europe urgently needs them for its industries. Plans for a mine in a nature reserve are drawing opposition.

There’s growing tension between environmental protection and Europe’s demand for critical raw materials in Finnish Lapland. Beneath a protected Arctic peatland near Sodankyla lie significant copper and nickel deposits needed for electric vehicles and battery production.

While environmental activists and reindeer herders warn of lasting impacts on nature and traditional livelihoods, mining advocates argue the project could strengthen Europe’s resource security, support the energy transition and create jobs. Authorities in Finland and the EU have yet to make a final decision.
