From fleeing Taliban rule to stepping onto the international pitch, Najma Arefi’s journey captures the fight of Afghan women for freedom, recognition and representation. Growing up in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban, Najma discovered football as a symbol of hope and possibility. That freedom ended when the Taliban returned to power, banning women and girls from sports and public life. Forced into exile, Najma rebuilt her life in the UK, balancing university studies with club football in northern England.
Now, she is part of Afghan Women United, a team of exiled players scattered across continents and reunited to play FIFA-registered international matches for the first time in over four years. Training under severe time pressure in Morocco, they face strong opponents and political hurdles, including visa refusals and lack of full FIFA recognition. Despite defeat on the pitch, the players see their return as a victory in itself—playing not just for themselves, but for millions of girls still silenced in Afghanistan.
