A powerful theater production in Ghana‘s capital, Accra, is bringing one of the darkest chapters in human history back into focus.

The play “The Darkest Chapter” tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade and its lasting impact on Africa and its people. While many people know the history, organizers say seeing it performed on stage helps audiences connect with it in a much deeper and more personal way.

Ghana has been pushing for greater recognition of the horrors of the slave trade on the global stage. Earlier this year, the country backed efforts at the United Nations to highlight the transatlantic slave trade as one of humanity’s greatest crimes.

Now, campaigners say the next step is building support for reparative justice, and they believe storytelling can play a key role in that process.

Productions like this are designed not just to educate, but to spark conversations and help people understand why calls for reparations continue today.
