Iran says it can reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States agrees to a ceasefire, sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets. The proposal has shifted attention to US President Donald Trump, who now faces growing pressure to balance regional stability with domestic political considerations.
Speaking to DW, Sara Kermanian, a political scientist at the University of Sussex, said Tehran’s offer is less a compromise than a strategic move to gain leverage. “I do not see beyond that actually how Iranian authorities have made any compromise,” she said.
Kermanian argues Iran is seeking to strengthen its position by exploiting US concerns over energy markets and regional instability. “Trump is under pressure. That is one of the paradigms they’re playing with,” she said.
