Iran stages huge funeral for slain supreme leader

Iran is staging its largest-ever state funeral on the same day as Americans mark 250 years of independence. Millions are expected to mourn former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, months after he was killed in US and Israeli strikes.

Iran  is staging what it describes as its largest-ever state funeral for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, held as the United States  marks 250 years of independence and amid a fragile ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.

Miad Maleki, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, examines whether the event is aimed at mourning Khamenei, projecting resilience after conflict with the US and Israel , and signaling continuity in Iran’s leadership.
