On Tuesday, the king of Morocco named former Marrakesh mayor Fatima Zahra Mansouri the country’s first female prime minister after her party won last week’s parliamentary elections. Her Authenticity and Modernity Party won 97 out of the 395 seats in Morocco’s House of Representatives ― well short of a majority, meaning they must form a coalition. Negotiations are still underway with other parties. While Morocco is a constitutional monarchy, the king retains broad authority over the military, religion and foreign affairs.
