Votes are being counted in New Zealand, with incumbent PM Christopher Luxon’s centre-right National Party and Chris Hipkins’ centre-left Labour Party currently neck-and-neck. Both parties are calling for compromise to find common ground as the vote tallies show the election is too close to call.

The latest electoral commission data suggests a slight lead for National in overall votes, but New Zealand’s electoral system often forces parties into coalition – which means Hipkins’ Labour Party may still take power.

Meanwhile, the centrist Opportunity Party crossed the 5% threshold to enter parliament for the first time. The party, led by Qiulae Wong, may hold the power in future coalition negotiations.
