It’s 7:00 a.m. in Salerno, south of Naples on the edge of the Amalfi Coast. During peak season, large cruise ships dock here several times a week for a few hours, bringing thousands of tourists at a time. Many of them board a bus or a boat to visit the picturesque towns along the Amalfi Coast. This leads to crowded streets in the small towns, traffic chaos, and frustration among the locals. Amalfi is one of the most popular destinations on the Amalfi Coast, so it’s often particularly crowded. Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere might be better off visiting other towns along the Amalfi Coast. Praiano, for example, lies between Amalfi and Positano and has hardly any day-trippers. “Raising awareness of these places also means that it’s not enough to just come here for three hours. Anyone who stays only that briefly won’t experience everything the Amalfi Coast has to offer,” says Andrea Ferraioli, president of the regional tourism board.
