He is plagued by problems, but Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchezis proving to be one of Europe’s great political survivors. His international profile keeps rising thanks to his criticism of US and Israeli conduct in wars, and his support for migration. But his image abroad contrasts with perceptions in Spain, where he is battling corruption allegations, political gridlock and polarization.
To understand how Sanchez has managed to hang on after eight years in power, DW speaks with Maria Ramirez, the managing editor of Spanish news outlet elDiario.es. She says Sanchez has benefited from a divided opposition, but warns that he has little room left to maneuver as the next general election looms.
