Cruising in summer, repairing in winter: In Sweden, owners of American classic cars take advantage of the country’s long winters to lovingly restore their vehicles. So, when summer finally arrives, they’re ready to hit the road again. Sweden is home to a subculture known as ‘raggare’, a youth culture built around American cars cruising, rock ‘n roll and defiance. We visit Moonshine Cruisers, one of Stockholm’s oldest active raggare car clubs. Some members simply have a passion for old cars, music and memories. For others, rejecting EVs and embracing V8s is an act of resistance to a changing world. So, in parts of the scene, nostalgia and rebellion also overlap with politics. In recent years, young people have taken to driving beat-up American cars rather than lovingly restored classics.
