The trial on 18 August stems from a lawsuit filed in 2023 by 29 US states, including California and New York, in which they claim Meta violated federal and state privacy laws for children and deliberately designed its platforms to be addictive to young people.

The BBC’s North America technology correspondent Lily Jamali explains how this case could significantly change how young people use social media platforms in the US, and potentially beyond.
