Stocks are moving lower on Friday. While the oil markets are relatively muted, Treasurys are selling off, and the 10-year yield is back at the key psychological level of 5%. Artificial intelligence stocks were mostly a bright spot, capping off what’s been a volatile week for the group as the market tried to figure out what this “pace the frontier” debate means for the group. AI industrial stocks like Eaton and GE Vernova were both higher — both Club names had positive things to say at investor conferences this week. Meanwhile, Broadcom , Micron and Qnity Electronics are higher within the semiconductor complex, but Intel is a little lower after a 12% rally between Wednesday and Thursday pushed the stock to its highest level since early July. Nvidia is basically flat. Cybersecurity stocks Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike , which were big outperformers at the start of the week due to mounting AI safety concerns, were met with profit-taking on Friday. It has been quiet on the DuPont front lately, as management did not participate in this week’s round of investor conference, but analysts at Wells Fargo published a note on Thursday maintaining their buy-equivalent overweight rating and reiterating their $166 price target. The analysts said any potential impact from the war in the Middle East “appears manageable,” with the region representing about 4% of total sales and the company working to offset oil and gas inflation through higher pricing. Wells made a few tweaks to its model, lowering its third quarter EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) estimate by $18 million and raising its fourth quarter estimate by $17 million — essentially a wash. DuPont shares have dropped about 13% since Aug. 5, a pullback that looks similar to many other industrials. Rising oil prices and interest rates have weighed on the sector. We feel better about DuPont’s ability to navigate its conflict-related headwinds based on the Wells Fargo note, but we’re holding off from putting more capital into this position until we start to see progress towards a resolution in the war. There are a few notable earning reports next week. Within the portfolio, Costco reports after the closing bell on Thursday. If recent history is a guide, Costco’s earnings probably won’t be a positive catalyst. Despite a usual beat on earnings, the stock has dropped on seven of the past eight earnings release. It’s been a rough few months for Costco after closing at a record high on May 19, down over 18% in that stretch. Shares have weakened further since late August along with a bunch of other consumer stocks. Other notable reports are from AutoZone , KB Home , Cintas , Paychex , General Mills , Cracker Barrel , and Darden Restaurants . On the data side, there is S & P Global US Manufacturing and Services PMI, weekly jobless claims, new home sales, durable goods orders, and University of Michigan consumer sentiment and 1-year inflation expectations.
